A Touch-Responsive Textile Merges Tradition and Innovation

2024

"Culture ‧ Future" is a groundbreaking interactive textile artwork uniting the timeless elegance of Chinese calligraphy with the possibilities of intelligent textile technology. The illuminated fabric features the iconic calligraphy of celebrated Hong Kong's master ink-painter, Dr. Kan Tai Keung, enable viewers to interact with art in a whole new way! "Culture ‧ Future" was showcased at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London in July 2024.

This world-first creation responds to both mid-air gestures and gentle touch. Embedded with capacitive sensors and AI-powered gesture recognition, the textile shifts colour and lighting effects in real time, transforming audience interaction into part of the artwork itself. Every movement, every touch, becomes a bridge between tradition and technology, opening the experience to all ages, cultures, and abilities. "Culture ‧ Future"  is more than an artwork—it’s a living canvas that invites participation, sparks connection, and redefines what cultural expression can be in the digital age.
